Turnover in accommodation and food services sector up by 3.4 percent in Q1

Q1 2025 was the sixteenth consecutive quarter in which the accommodation and food services sector generated more turnover than in the same quarter a year earlier. The last quarter in which the turnover in this sector decreased was Q1 2021, when measures to prevent the coronavirus from spreading were still in force.

Turnover in accommodation services increased by almost 1 percent
In Q1 2025, turnover in accommodation services, which includes hotels and holiday parks, increased by 0.6 percent year on year. Hotel turnover was up by 2.3 percent on Q1 2024, while holiday rentals and camping sites recorded a decrease of 3.5 percent.
Turnover in food and beverage outlets over 4 percent higher
The turnover of food and beverage outlets increased by 4.4 percent compared with Q1 2024.
Canteens and catering recorded the largest increase in turnover in the accommodation and food services sector, at 5.5 percent. Restaurants saw their turnover grow by 5.0 percent. Fast-food outlets and cafés recorded an increase in turnover of 2.8 and 4.0 percent, respectively.

Entrepreneurs in the accommodation and food services sector less negative
Almost four weeks ago, Statistics Netherlands published new data on business confidence in the Dutch private sector in Q2 2025. Business confidence has fallen for the second consecutive quarter. However, confidence in the accommodation and food services sector improved. Nevertheless, confidence in this sector remains the most negative of the private sector.
Business confidence in the accommodation and food services sector rose from -17.9 at the beginning of Q1 2025 to -12.3 in Q2 2025. Businesses in this sector were less negative about economic conditions over the past three months, but slightly more negative about the economic outlook for the next three months.
